![]() ![]() The latter comprise of totally new recordings of different players and sound slightly better - and are sold separately of the Complete bundle. The first one is a bit older and I got them as part of the Xsample Complete Acoustic Instruments Library bundle. Xsample Solo Strings and Xsample Contemporary Solo Strings. Then I have to mention these ones as well: I didn’t even add reverb or do any mixing. So it illustrates the out-of-the-box results JB can yield. I like to stress this is nothing special, no music by me ever is, and I have posted it before because I really do not have much of my stuff online, but this was just literally all played in live in a matter of minutes. Here’s me noodling around for a couple of seconds with the JB Essential. Embertone definitely belongs to the best of the best. You may conclude -like I have- that ultimately having just one solo strings option won’t cut it. Also, again solo strings and flautando specialist has posted a lot about what he calls the circle of sweetspots, look it up and read up on it. I recommend you get this one anyway, it is so easy going, so playable and has a particular sweetspot that is beautiful (for lyrical stuff). Joshua Bell is a particular highlight but is not part of the bundle. (So by my own logic that means “even harsher than most” I guess haha). I love their tone, although some may find it slightly harsh (Blakus especially). Joshua Bell, and the other Embertone Intimate Solo Strings: very very good. runs an excellent current thread about this one. I do have the Arché ones, but have not mastered them enough to say anything sensible about them). Some of the tweakability (artificial vibrato option) comes at the expense of a certain “synthy-ness”, much like how some of the modelled instruments can sometimes suffer from it (SWAM, Sample Modeling, Reasonstudios Friktion -I do not have those though. Can be very intimidating because of the fact that everything is tweakable, so expect a learning curve. ![]() ![]() ![]() Comes with loads of shorts, and the excellent Note Head concept (look up the Dirk Ehhlert video - somewhere around the 45-55 minute mark he explains how it works). A very tight recording and the package just oozes German quality control. The bundle comes with several different instruments, which offers more choices and options in tonality and character. Please look for ‘s excellent posts about this library and his journey to use its vibrato to his musical advantage.Ĭhris Hein: recorded very dry. I remember someone a year ago who couldn’t come to terms with it whatsoever. It has a pretty pronounced vibrato and has a baked in recorded rebow that adds to the realism but is in fact loathed by some. Spitfire Solo Strings: great tone, suited for modern quartet writing, recorded in AIR so also very suited for usage as leads in symphonic pieces (alongside other libraries recorded in that hall). I largely agree with his or her assessment of the qualities and attributes of these. Of the stuff he mentions I own Chris Hein, SsS and the Joshua Bell (Essential). I think has posted a very good concise analysis already. Basically, that is what these instruments sound like when played and recorded with very good mics. Very emotional sounding tone to me which I think makes them perfectly suitable for solo lines.Ĭlick to expand.People tend to forget that actual proper recordings of solo string instruments will likely always sound “harsh” to our ears. They also include a couple of other violins with different tones / articulations. Spitfire Solo Strings - I really like this package, especially with the performance violin and cello patches, which I find very playable. The tone is once again polarizing so listen to the demos. It is highly flexible, but you need to be a good programmer to get the most of it. Chris Hein Solo Violin and Cello - he actually provides multiple instruments for each package. Tina Guo vol 1 - Widely praised, but also limited to flowing, slow legato lines with heavy vibrato. The tone is one that may be polarizing, so listen to the demos. Emotional Cello - a large amount of articulations and ornaments, which come in handy when programming lines. Though, tonally, quite classical, so may not fit your particular piece. Joshua Bell - just violin, but a pretty amazing achievement. I own a few - all of which have different strengths and weaknesses: ![]()
